This morning I got curious about Firefox 3 beta 4 when I read;

First look: Firefox 3 beta 4 brings new Vista hotness.

And especially;

Efforts to improve Firefox performance have continued steadily, and developers say that the latest beta is twice as fast as Firefox 2 when running popular web applications like Zoho Office and GMail. Aggressive memory reduction has been a high priority during the Firefox 3 development cycle, and it clearly shows in this beta release.

Since I’m temporarily on a very slow mobile Internet connection I can use all the performance improvements I can get to give me some extra sense of speed.  So I was glad I could download the installer (only 6.8 MB for my Dutch installation) and do the smooth installation besides my current Firefox 2 installation and give it a try.

O man it’s great. Amazing. And the performance is indeed great, but there was something that struck me even more.

Rich address bar

I want to show you one little feature improvement that I like so much that it, in isolation, would be enough to convince me to upgrade.(Well not really, I can only make the switch between two versions of Firefox once most of my addons are compatible with the new version.) But this in my humble opinion is priceless!

Here it is, look what they’ve done to the address bar’s suggest functionality. Instead of printing a list of urls Mozilla upgraded it to a list that gives so much more information!

RichNewFirefoxAddressBar

Look, so much information in a beautiful compact format;

  • Page URLs.
  • Page titles. Much more informative then mere (semantic or not) url’s.
  • Page icons. I like those.
  • Bookmarked or not. Indicated by a star.

And this is all I discovered in a quick first glance, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s even more information in there. And then the interaction is wonderful. See what happened as I typed just “th” in the address bar.

RichNewFirefoxAddressBar2

There’s URL’s in that list that don’t start with “th”, like the first Flickr url. (I think that’s in the top of the list because I just visited Flickr to upload a picture for this blog post.) Notice that there’s even url’s in that list that don’t even contain a consecutive ‘t’ and ‘h’. See there’s http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605/en-us an URL not containing “th”, but a page that contains “th” in it’s title! Brilliant isn’t it? Excellent way to search for pages, much closer to how my mind works, since this allows me to remember pages by the subject they discussed (probably something I vividly remember since I would otherwise wouldn’t want to search it back) and not by their URL. And it’s wonderful to see that the parts of the strings in the list that match your address (or must I say “search query“) are highlighted as you type!

Thank you Firefox for making my day! I can’t wait to see Firefox 3 get out of it’s beta stage! Bring it on.

    Actually that’s horrible. It covers most of the page you’re viewing, it’s annoying, it’s not clear enough to read quickly. It is an ADRESS bar, I want to type adresses (not page titles) in there and remember the ones already typed, I don’t want it making http requests every second to suggest me stuff. FF 3 is goind deep down the sink, I bet it’ll lose most of it’s market share to IE 8 and Safari.

    Not to mention the most ugly buttons I’ve seen lately. That orange round back button looks like it’s flashing all the time with all that color going on and breaking the toolbar boundaries. The stop button is now very hard to find at a glance, without the red background. Mozilla is sticking usability up it’s ass.

  3. Hi Ricardo,
    thanks for your comments.
    that’s some interesting views you got there. You seem a little bit disappointed, a big difference with my first experiences with FireFox 3!
    I’m curious how could you mind that your view of your page is blocked while your typing a new address to go to. It obscuring the page that your navigating away from, how’s that horrible, it doesn’t make sense right?
    In my humble opinion Mozilla made an effort to be less visible. The browsers buttons and bars seem to take less space. (I haven’t measured the exact pixel difference with FF2, but it seems to be considerable.) The fullscreen (F11) is now really full screen, without the addon. (At least in FireFox 3beta5 which I’m now running.) All positive changes that make the visible web page area larger!
    It’s indeed in the first place an address bar and it’s suggesting addresses but it’s helping you find those addresses quickly by even doing suggestions based on meta-data, so that it allows for some faulty memory on your side. (In my case it’s far more likely that I remember the title of a page than a URL.)
    I’m not sure that the Address bar is doing HTTP-requests while you type. I think all the suggestions come from a combination of your history (as cached on your system) and your list of bookmarked pages.
    I don’t know where you’ve seen flashing back buttons. FireFox 3 beta4 an beta5 have a blue back button. And it’s looking good. Certainly not flashing. (Is it a third party theme you installed?)
    I don’t agree with you on the visibility of the stop button. You might miss it on your first glance, but it’s certainly visible when you need it.

    If you take a better look, you might find out that your being a little to pessimistic about FireFox 3.
    You sure haven’t killed my enthusiasm. I think FireFox 3 makes a worthy opponent for IE 8 and Safari and is more likely to win market share then to loss it.

    I have to agree with Theo, I like the new feel of firefox 3 so far. I have heard a lot of complaints about the new address bar, but I don’t really get the complaints either. I do not think I’ll use the address bar very much, but now I might end up using it more often then I have in the past. I think it is a good idea to incorporate history and bookmarks, (and page titles) instead of just url’s. It will appeal to a wider audience. I like the new look as well, much cleaner, it was time for a change. Anyway it’s still a beta, so who knows what will happen before the official release.

    Interesting feature in FF3. I just checked out Opera v9.5 beta2 released recently…it has your entire history search from the address, not just URLs and titles…it indexes the entire web page…very handy to find pages you visited but forgot about.

    Ricardo is right. The rich Urlbar is disgusting with how much space it wastes. The old style gave much more information in a much smaller space. What’s even worse is that there seems to be no way to disable it in 3.0.

    With this addon you can go back to FF2 Address bar / Location bar.
    Not only in aspect but also in functionality!!!
