Whooha. I’m flabbergasted.

This is truly unbelievable. There is a service called spoofcard, which for $10/hour let’s you impersonate whoever you want to impersonate. Their websites slogan – check it out for yourself if you don’t believe me – is: “Be Who You Want To Be”.

It appears that Paris Hilton wanted to be Lindsay Lohan for a while, to create some havoc in Lindsays circle of friends. Last month the New York Post reported that someone had stolen the password to Lohan’s BlackBerry and sent her friends “disgusting and very mean messages that everyone thought were coming from Lindsay.” Lohan’s representatives hinted that Paris Hilton may have been behind it. Well it could have gone like this but it can also be done otherwise. As it turns out it isn’t necessary to physically have Lindsays phone/Blackberry to impersonate her, just knowing the owners caller ID number is enough. It has not been proved yet that Paris Hilton is involved in sending the disgusting messages but an InfoWorld article states that Paris Hilton is at least accused of hacking into voice mail accounts using the spoofcard service. Her spoofcard account and that of fifty others have been suspended. With Lindsay Lohan being a victim of an impersonator and Paris Hilton being one, you do the math. I kind of like this new episode in this celebrity feud, but it is scary how easy it seem to impersonate arbitrary people.

So how does this impersonating work. It’s simple

  1. Buy a $10 spoofcard
  2. Choose who you want to call
  3. Give the caller ID of the person you want to be
  4. Choose the voice you want to use(!)
SpoofCard offers the ability to select a Male or Female voice when making a call. The feature works in real-time and allows the caller to speak in a normal tone while the person on the other end will hear the changed voice.
  5. Do your call….

So how does this translate into hacking into voice-mails. Apparently the voice-mail services of American’s phone networks, just use your caller ID as method of identification, no passwords whatsoever required!
